WhatsApp Utility credits: order status notifications

Order status notifications on WhatsApp (payment confirmed, shipped, canceled) are sent as Utility messages. Meta charges much less for them than for marketing messages.

Order status notifications are sent only with WhatsApp Utility credits, never with your regular WhatsApp credits. Marketing messages keep using your regular credits.

  • Where to buy: you buy the WhatsApp Utility package (a monthly subscription) in Payments and usage > Premium add-ons (button Buy Utility credits), in Account health (top bar), or through the hint in the WhatsApp message settings of the After sale flow.

  • 500 free credits: every client with a verified WhatsApp gets 500 Utility credits for free, valid until the beginning of January 2027. A new number gets 500 credits when it is verified, once per account.

  • Without Utility credits: when they run out or expire, order status notifications are not sent until you buy a Utility package.

  • Mexico: clients from Mexico cannot buy a Utility package yet. Notifications stop when the 500 free credits run out or expire.

How does it work in practice?

After adding WhatsApp to your subscription in edrone, you choose one of the available packages. Credits will be added to your account every month, according to the number of messages provided in the chosen package. Unused credits (templates) remain available for a limited time.

If a message is not delivered, it won't be considered valid, meaning it won't count as a send.

What are WhatsApp templates and what is a 24-hour window message?

In WhatsApp Business, there are two main methods of business communication:

  • message templates

  • messages within the 24-hour window.

Message templates are predefined messages that can be sent automatically to users in different situations, such as information about products added to the cart. Order status notifications are also sent as templates, but they are Utility messages and use WhatsApp Utility credits, not the credits of your regular package. They are approved by WhatsApp and can be sent outside the 24-hour window, regardless of the user’s last interaction. WhatsApp charges only for delivered templates.

Messages within the 24-hour window allow businesses to communicate with users for 24 hours from the customer’s last message. Within this window, messages can be sent without additional charges.

In short, you pay only for delivered templates, and you don’t pay for replies within the 24-hour window.

WhatsApp works in such a way that to initiate active contact with a user, you need to use a verified and WhatsApp-approved message template that complies with the platform’s guidelines. Using such a template generates costs. Once the template is sent and the customer replies, a 24-hour window opens, during which free communication with the customer is possible, with no additional charges. You only pay for delivered templates. Moreover, there are no charges when customers reply to business messages, as long as the business responds within 24 hours. The communication window is enforced by WhatsApp.

Templates can be used in the Custom Flow, Ready Flow, Newsletter, and Inbox functionalities.

After a customer’s message, a 24-hour window opens, during which all your replies in the Inbox are free of charge. Only delivered templates are charged.

Why do they have to pay for WhatsApp shipments when the application is free?

WhatsApp Business is available for free for small and medium-sized businesses. However, there is a fee for using certain advanced features, including template functions and business message sending. WhatsApp aims to earn revenue from business communication services. Utilizing advanced features such as templates and business message sending requires infrastructure resources and technical support. Charging fees for business message sending may encourage companies to responsibly use business communication features and avoid abuse. These fees can serve as a filter, limiting the amount of unwanted or spam business messages.
