Simply put: automation is when messages are sent automatically based on pre-defined rules (for example, sending a “welcome” message as soon as someone signs up). Custom flow is when you create a tailored sequence of messages, defining steps, conditions, and content according to your customer’s journey and behavior.
How about sending WhatsApp messages in your custom flow? Let’s learn how!
First things first: Create a WhatsApp message template.
Go to Automations > Custom Flows > WhatsApp Templates > New Template.
Now let’s create the template:
Give the template a name so you can easily find it in the list. Use a name related to the custom flow you’re going to create.
Decide if your message will have a title, and then write your message. On the simulator to the left, you can see how it will look on a mobile screen.
Next, choose whether your message will include an unsubscribe option and whether you want to add buttons to the message.
Available buttons:
Visit URL: Add the website or page you want customers to be redirected to when they click.
Call: Add the phone number customers will call for a voice conversation when they click.
All set? Click Publish.
The message will go to the template list and will await Meta’s approval.
Once approved, its status will change from “Pending” to “Approved” and it will be ready to use in your custom flow.
Creating the custom flow
Now, let’s create the custom flow and use that WhatsApp template—when customers trigger the action, they’ll receive your WhatsApp message!
Go to Automations > Custom Flows and click New Flow
Create your new flow according to your strategy, and when it’s time to add the WhatsApp send action, follow these steps:
Click the + to add a new step to the custom flow.
Select Activate.
Choose Send WhatsApp Message.
Selected the message you want? Click Save.
From the list, select the template you created and that has been approved by Meta (if it’s not approved yet, it won’t appear and you’ll need to wait).
The message will be added to the custom flow and sent when the customer reaches that step.
Everything ready? Save and publish your flow to start engaging customers!
