When delivering messages to mailboxes, mail providers verify the reputation of the IP from which the messages originate. The purpose of such verification is to determine whether a message should be delivered and to which folder.

IP reputation is one of the many factors that contribute to high email deliverability.

Both dedicated and shared IP have their pros and cons.

Shared IP

  1. Shared reputation:

    • With a shared IP address, users have a chance to build a shared reputation. If everyone adheres to good emailing practices, those using the same IP can enjoy a high level of deliverability and avoid problems with the spam filter.

    • Negligence on the part of one sender can negatively affect the entire group of users of a shared IP, which can result in difficulties in message deliverability.

  2. Blacklists:

    • Shared IPs increase the risk of falling into blacklists. However, if all users follow the rules, this risk is minimized.

  3. Message queuing:

    • For large mailings from one sender, other messages may be delayed.

  4. Segregating messages:

    • Spam filters can treat all participants of a given IP uniformly, which can negatively affect the deliverability of marketing messages.

A shared IP is a more cost-effective solution.

Shared IP is recommended especially for senders who are starting out with email marketing, don't send a lot of messages or are not regular in their mailings.

Dedicated IP

  1. Independent reputation:

    • Dedicated IPs allow you to build an individual reputation, eliminating the risk of it being contaminated by other users. It allows you to more easily identify factors affecting deliverability and correct them.

    • Maintaining a good reputation requires the sender to follow mailing ethics.
So in this case, you yourself are responsible for your successes and mistakes made in the context of email deliverability.

  2. No message queuing:

    • Dedicated IPs avoid the problems associated with message queuing by allowing the sender to control the timing and quantity of messages sent.

    • Having to manage an email list yourself can be time-consuming.

  3. Checking blacklists:

    • Dedicated IP users can proactively monitor and remove blocked email addresses, which contributes to maintaining a clean database.

    • The need to interact with support for blacklisting issues may require additional involvement on your part.

Dedicated IPs are a more expensive solution requiring proactive measures to take care of the IP's high reputation.
