Image dimensions in the message creator

When adding images in the message creator, keep a few rules in mind to help your campaigns display correctly in inboxes. When choosing the image width, make sure it fits your needs. You can use any size, but we recommend choosing one of the following:

  1. 600 px wide is the standard in email marketing. Messages at this width stay lightweight, render well on most devices, and don't raise your SPAM risk. Keep in mind that on mobile devices the email is usually displayed at around 400–450 px wide. That means the layout may look slightly different from desktop, so always check the preview in both desktop and mobile.

  2. 450 px wide will look fairly narrow on desktop, but still readable. On mobile, it will look very close to the desktop version, which means a lower risk of layout shifts. A good fit if you want the email to look consistent across devices.

  3. Messages between 700 and 900 px wide are wider on desktop and still render correctly in inboxes. We don't recommend going above 900 px, since it can hurt readability and design consistency. On mobile, the width will scale down and graphic elements will be resized — pay special attention to text inside images: small lettering can become hard to read or illegible.

Image dimensions inside the message

Full-width images — matching the width of your message — are a popular choice for a clean, cohesive layout. Just keep in mind that on mobile devices the image will be scaled down, so if it contains text, check that it stays readable. Very small lettering can become hard to read.

Example: a banner at 600x340 px.

Images around 450 px wide: on desktop, an image this size leaves noticeable margins on the sides. A good fit if you want the banner to look similar on desktop and mobile.

Example: a banner at 450x515 px.

Image height is up to you — width is what drives the scaling. Pick a height that fits your needs and brand style.

Can I use GIFs in mailings?

You can use GIFs in messages as long as the file size doesn't exceed 2 MB.

A few things to keep in mind when using GIFs:

  • GIFs only support 256 colors per frame, so images lose saturation and look less appealing.

  • They're usually heavy, which can:

    • slow down message loading,

    • cause display issues,

    • increase the risk of landing in the SPAM folder.

Optimizing a GIF (reducing its weight) is possible, but it noticeably hurts quality — the image becomes washed out and less readable.

👉 That's why we recommend lighter static formats (JPG, PNG) or short videos embedded as a link.
